Cindy Vanina '79 Chooses to Invest in Students

For Cindy Vanina, her term abroad in Bath, England, was a lynchpin – a pivotal place that set the course for the rest of her life.
"I grew up locally and though I lived on campus, I frequently went home to see my family," Cindy said. "A term abroad in Bath gave me the chance to learn how to live independently. It taught me that I could do anything and spurred a lifelong love of travel."
A longtime member of the Ramée Circle Society, Cindy recently made a current-use gift as well. It will establish an endowed fund to support the study abroad experiences of current and future students.
Growing up in Upstate New York, Cindy knew that she wanted to experience different ways of life and unique histories.
"It's important that young people are exposed to different cultures and perspectives. This prevents them from becoming stuck in their own little worlds," she explained. "Travel helps you understand history and how historical events affected people. My experience living and traveling in Europe still helps me navigate today's challenging events and conflicts."
Cindy traces her career success directly back to Union.
"We had so many opportunities at the career center that helped me figure out what I wanted to do. I never felt the need to connect my major to a particular career because I learned how to think logically and problem-solve," she said. 'I want to invest in future generations, and I think my gift is a great way to do it."
"As a small, liberal arts college, Union focuses on the individual, making them well-rounded. The College doesn't pigeon-hole students for particular careers, and I'd like to support that going forward." Cindy added. "It's also important to be a part of a community, and Union is, ultimately and fundamentally, a nurturing community. We need to step up today as individuals to help higher education at a time when federal funding is being drastically reduced."
