Meet the Tri-Chairs

  • Madeline Berger '79

While Madeline, a political science major, had envisioned a career in politics, following working in the not-for-profit sector for the NYS Assembly Deputy Major Leader and then for AFS International, she made a major shift in 1984. She joined then fledgling ESPN, where she built a career focused on identifying and implementing new distribution and revenue-generating opportunities for its sports content. In 2000, she launched her own consulting business serving a variety of clients including the NFL, NHL and Qualcomm. Ultimately, Madeline joined Qualcomm as an employee where she was instrumental in bringing live television to wireless devices by negotiating first-of-a-kind agreements with major media companies. She then went on to join Google where she closed content distribution deals to launch Google's U.S. fiber systems and YouTube TV before retiring.

  • Tim McCabe '73

During his 16 years on the Union College Board of Trustees, Tim McCabe saw how crucial planned gifts are to Union's financial health and future well-being.

The longtime AT&T employee made a planned gift in appreciation of Union's offering him financial aid as a student: "I have a debt to repay, but we all do. Like those before us who made our Union education possible, I'd urge you to give back with a planned gift."

  • Cindy Vanina '79

Following graduation from Union, Cindy pursued a career in finance at GE Capital and then JP Morgan. Her degree in mathematics was instrumental in evaluating leverage buyouts when projecting future business success using logic and analytics she learned at Union. At JP Morgan, she evaluated tax-oriented investments in low-income affordable housing. After retirement, she followed her passion for cooking to pursue a second career teaching children in underserved neighborhoods nutrition and healthy cooking. Her term abroad at Union spurred her love of travel to better understand the cultures and rich traditions of others she encounters now on her many travels.

Cliff "learned to learn at Union," which served him well in life and during his long management career, mostly at New Jersey Bell/Bell Atlantic.

"I have made planned gifts as a way to thank past individuals who generously supported Union as an investment in our future leaders and as a means of ensuring Union's continued place in education's top echelons."
